It’s common to believe that the adverse effects of antidepressants are not permanent. The way antidepressants work is by changing the amounts of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the brain. These medications may be very beneficial in lowering anxiety and depression symptoms, but their effects often need ongoing use.

Antidepressants often need long-term, consistent use to get the full therapeutic advantages. Symptoms may reappear if medication is stopped abruptly or if it is stopped without seeing a doctor.

If the decision is made to quit taking antidepressants, it is imperative that this be done under a physician’s guidance. When the medication is weaned off gradually, there is a decreased chance of experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which helps to ensure a smooth transition.
